Northridge Drops Straight Set Decision at UC Santa Barbara

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Cal State Northridge wrapped up a two-match trip to the central coast with a 25-19, 25-13, 26-24 loss to UC Santa Barbara. Freshman Natalie Allen led the Matadors with 12 kills but no other CSUN hitter had more than six.
The Matadors (9-15, 2-7 Big West) got 12 kills from Allen who hit .206 to go with four digs and one ace. Junior Una Siljegovic added six kills (.000) and three blocks and Sydney Gedryn, earning her first start since the second match of the year, had 21 assists, six blocks, two kills and two digs. Libero Cindy Ortiz had a match-high 16 digs in the loss.
The Matadors, who hit .031 (34-30-127) in the match, were stifled in the first two sets as CSUN hit .000 in the opening set and -.077 in the second. But the Matadors improved to a .143 clip in the third set but came up just short.
The Gauchos took the first two sets but the third set was the closest of the three as the Matadors overcame an early 8-4 deficit. Kills by Allen, Gedryn and Janet Alvarado capped a 3-0 run as CSUN got within one at 8-7. The Matadors pulled within one seven more times midway through the set, the last at 15-14 before UCSB seemingly pulled away with a 4-0 run.
Trailing 20-15, the Matadors outscored the Gauchos 5-2 over the next seven points to get within 22-20 after a Monica McFarland-Morales block. Facing match point at 24-22, Northridge got a kill from McFarland and a UCSB hitting error to pull even. The Gauchos however sided-out on the next point before stuffing a Siljegovic attack eding the match.
Charlene DeHoog had a match-high 10 kills (.167) to lead the Gauchos. Setter Dana Vargas added a double-double of 29 assists and 11 digs in the win.
Northridge returns home for its next two matches, Oct. 29 against Pacific and Oct. 30 against UC Davis. Both matches begin at 7 p.m.
