BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Cal State Northridge could not hold a two sets to one lead and dropped the final two sets as the Matadors dropped their third straight, 18-25, 25-13, 16-25, 25-23, 15-12 to CSU Bakersfield in a non-conference match at the Icardo Center.
Junior Brittany Williams paced Northridge (4-11) with 14 kills (.140) while senior Angela Hupp posted her first triple-double of the season (11th of her career) with 12 kills, 22 assists and 14 digs as the Matadors shifted to a 6-2 lineup. Junior Lynda Morales also reached double figures in kills with 10 while hitting .429. Britney Graff (13) and Karina Woehrstein (12) each had double figures in digs while Sam Orlandini matched Hupp with 22 assists for Northridge which hit .175 (50-23-154) as a team.
Four of the Matadors past five losses have come in heartbreaking, five-set fashion but this one saw Northridge hold a 10-6 lead in the fifth set. But as has been the case in recent losses, the Roadrunners put together a 5-1 run to knot the score at 11-11. Graff was blocked on the next point giving CSUB its first lead of the set at 12-11 before a Roadrunner hitting error evened the set 12-12. After a CSUB kill, an untimely hitting error from Morales followed by another block on Graff sent the Matadors to their third straight loss.
Northridge, who hit well in set three (.370) and set four (.278), out-hit the Runners .175 to .116 but was aced 11 times by CSUB.
Alysia Baker led the Roadrunners with a match-high 15 kills (.297) while Lindsay Toone (.095) added 13 and Lindy DeGeare (.045) chipped in 12.
Cal State Northridge returns home to open up a three-match homestand beginning next Tuesday, Oct. 6 as the Matadors host No.24 UC Irvine in a Big West match in The Matadome at 7 p.m.
