DAVIS, Calif. - Despite 18 kills from senior Angela Hupp, Cal State Northridge dropped its Big West Conference opener at UC Davis on Friday night. Set scores were 25-20, 14-25, 25-17, 22-25, 15-9.
The five set loss for the Matadors (4-9, 0-1 Big West) is their third heartbreaker in their last four matches. After defeating Northern Arizona in five sets on Aug. 29, Northridge has dropped its last three five-set matches.
UC Davis (11-5, 2-0 Big West) held off the Matadors in a match lasting nearly two hours.
Hupp led Northridge with 18 kills (.333) while adding 14 digs, three blocks, six assists and one ace. Freshman Britney Graff also posted double figures with 12 kills but hit just .167. Junior Lynda Morales added nine kills (.240) and a season-high nine blocks. Setter Sam Orlandini registered 42 assists and 13 digs in the loss while the defensive duo of Karina Woehrstein and Monica McFarland combined for 26 digs.
Hitting percentage was the difference on Friday as the Matadors hit .161 in set one and .125 in set three, both losses. Northridge however responded to hit .290 in set two and .302 in set four, both Matador wins. The Aggies, however, out-hit Northridge .421 to .217 in winning set five 15-9.
The Matadors wound up out-hitting UC Davis in the match .225 (57-21-160) to .185 (58-27-168) and out-blocked UC Davis 11.0 to 8.0.
Aggie freshman Allison Whitson posted a match-high 19 kills (.216) in the win while Kayla Varney and Melanie Adams each added 12 kills.
Cal State Northride looks to break even on the conference-opening trip as the Matadors head to Stockton on Saturday to take on the Pacific Tigers. First serve at the Spanos Center is scheduled for 7 p.m.
