Matadors Knock Off Santa Clara in Four Sets, 25-22, 25-22, 14-25, 25-23
Sept. 10, 2010
SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Junior Sam Orlandini had 42 assists and four aces to lead Cal State Northridge to a 25-22, 25-22, 14-25, 25-23 win over Santa Clara Friday night at the Leavy Center.
The Matadors (3-5), who dropped a tough five-set match to Seattle earlier in the day, bounced back to post an important road win over the Broncos (5-3).
Orlandini, who leads CSUN with 10 aces on the season, added four to her total against Santa Clara. After struggling to hit .136 against Seattle, Orlandini led the Matadors to a .239 clip against Santa Clara. Mahina Haina (.258), Monica McFarland (.205) and Lynda Morales (.400) each had 12 kills to lead the Northridge offense. Morales also added a team-high five blocks (one solo). Freshman Natalie Allen added her third double-double of the season with 11 kills (.296) and 12 digs.
"After a tough match against a good Seattle team, we turned around and played a good match against a physical Santa Clara team," said head coach Jeff Stork. "We executed the game plan very well and we hung tough at the end."
The Matadors took the first two sets by identical 25-22 scores. Northridge hit .229 in set one and .267 in set two while holding the Broncos under .200 in each set.
The Broncos turned the tables in set three, outhitting the Matadors .483-.167 and cruising to the 25-14 win.
Trailing 13-12 in the fourth set, Northridge engineered a 6-0 run to open up an 18-13 cushion. Then the Matadors held on as Santa Clara closed the gap to 22-20 following Janet Alvarado's hitting error. A Bronco hitting error put Northridge up 23-20 but two straight Santa Clara points trimmed the lead to one. But a Puneet Pataria kill and Allen's kill on match point sent CSUN to its third win of the season.
Cal State Northridge returns to San Jose on Saturday to take on Portland State at 1 p.m. at Spartan Gym.
