Final Stats

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Angela Hupp and Brittney Graff combined for 16 kills but it wasn't nearly enough to overcome a tough hitting performance as Cal State Northridge fell in straight sets, 25-12, 25-18, 25-18 to the Rice Owls at the USF Asics Challenge.

The Matadors (2-3), who hit a solid .322 in Friday night's four-set loss to San Francisco, combined to hit just .064 against Rice (6-1) on Saturday. Graff was the only hitter to hit over .200 as she wound up at .208. Hupp (.094) struggled with eight kills and five errors in 32 swings. Monica McFarland's 13 digs was a bright spot for the Matadors in the loss.

Despite the score, Northridge stayed close for a portion of set one. Hupp's only ace of the match pulled the Matadors within one at 11-10. But as was the case in Friday's match, Northridge was victimized by a big run, this time 11-0 as Rice blew open the set to win 25-12. The Owls had 19 kills to the Matadors' four and hit .500 while Northridge struggled to hit -.031.

The second and third sets were closer but the Matadors were able to tie the score one time, 3-3 in set two. After hitting negative in the first set, Northridge hit .167 in the second frame and .062 in the third.

Natalie Bogan led Rice with 15 kills while hitting .609 while Tracey Lam had a match-high 14 digs.

Cal State Northridge has a quick turnaround as the Matadors close out the USF Asics Challenge against San Diego State at 4 p.m.
