SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Freshman Natalie Allen pounded a team-high 16 kills but Cal State Northridge dropped the final two sets, including a 19-17 decision in the fifth set, as Northern Colorado topped the Matadors 22-25, 25-23, 21-25, 25-23, 19-17 Saturday evening.
Northridge (0-3) was looking for its first win of the weekend as well as the season and looked to be in control after taking a two sets to one lead after taking set three 25-21. But the Bears (1-2) came from behind in both the fourth and fifth sets to pick up their first win of the season.
Allen, a freshman from Murrieta, Calif., had the best offensive match of her young Matador career as she pounded 16 kills, hitting .317 to go with five aces. She also added nine digs and four blocks. Sophomore Monica McFarland also had a solid match as she posted a double-double with 14 kills (.306) and 15 digs. Senior Lynda Morales also reached double figures with 11 kills (.208) to go with four blocks.
The Matadors continued to hit well as they hit a season-high .299 (64-17-157) but could not slow down Northern Colorado's Kelly Arnold who pounded a match-high 30 kills.
An Allen kill gave Northridge its final lead of the fourth set as the Matadors led 22-21 looking to wrap up the match. Two straight points put the Bears up 23-22 before another Allen kill evened things for the final time at 23. Back-to-back kills from Ashley Lichtenberg sent the match to a fifth set.
Despite seeing the match go to a fifth set, the Matadors had to like their chances after jumping out to an early 7-2 lead highlighted by a pair of Allen aces. A Morales kill gave Northridge another five-point lead at 8-3 before the Bears stormed back winning nine of the next 13 points to even the set at 12. Allen's 16th and final kill gave the Matadors their final lead at 13-12 and the teams traded sideouts until 17-17 when kills from Breanna Williams and Arnold gave Northern Colorado the 19-17 win.
Cal State Northridge continues its early season tournament play next weekend as the Matadors take on Elon, Texas-San Antonio and Sacramento State as part of the Sacramento State Invitational in the State capital.
