LONG BEACH, Calif. - Former Cal State Northridge All-American Jen Fopma, along with teammate Brooke Sweat, reached the second round of the Long Beach Grand Slam which is part of the FIVB Beach Volleyball Open.
Fopma and Sweat advanced out of pool play Tuesday and Wednesday (July 23-24) by winning two of three matches. The duo defeated the Canadian team of Broder-Valjas, 21-16, 21-14 then dominated the Austrian team of Klopf-Teufl, 21-6, 21-19. In their final match of pool play, Agatha-Antonelli of Brazil defeated Fopma-Sweat in a thriller 21-19, 29-27.
Despite the loss, Fopma-Sweat advanced to Wednesday's round one where they came back with another dominating effort 21-8, 21-11 over the Czech Republic team of Bonnerova-Hermannova. That gave them a spot in the second round Thursday where they were eliminated by the American team of Lauren Fendrick and Brittany Hochevar 21-18, 22-20.
The Grand Slam event in Long Beach marked the first time in a decade that the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour held an event in the United States. It is the 10th FIVB event ever held in the United States, fifth in Southern California and first since the Tour visited a USA Olympic Training Center in Carson, Calif. in 2003.
