SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Cal State Northridge had its season-long, four-match win streak snapped as the host San Francisco Dons handed the Matadors a 25-18, 25-21, 25-18 loss in the championship match of the Asics Coca-Cola Challenge at War Memorial Gym.
The Matadors (6-3), who defeated LIU Brooklyn in five tough sets earlier in the day, ran out of steam against the Dons hitting .145 in the straight set loss. Northridge still wound up 2-1 in the tournament which was good for second place. Juniors Sydney Gedryn and Mahina Haina were both named to the All-Tournament Team.
Junior Britney Graff was the only Matador hitter to reach double figures against USF as she put down 10 kills (.250) to go with six digs and three blocks. Haina (.269) Casey Hinger (.150) each had eight kills while CSUN's leading hitter Natalie Allen was limited to three kills in 15 attacks (.067) but contributed a team-high 17 digs.
Cindy Ortiz posted 12 digs while Gedryn dished out 31 assists to go with 10 digs, her fifth double-double of the season. The Matadors out-blocked the Dons 6.5-3.0 and had 54 team digs to 50. The team kill totals were almost even (41-40) but USF hit over .100 points higher (.246-.145). The Dons also benfitted from five service aces while CSUN had none.
After hitting .041 in set one and .105 in set two, the Matadors got their offense in gear in set three as CSUN had 16 kills while hitting .324. In most cases that would be good enough for a set win but in this case USF also upped its hitting to .429 with 16 kills and just one error in taking the final set 25-18.
Jocelyn Levig led the Dons with a match-high 13 kills (.175) while teammate Ester De Vries added 11 kills (.360). Tournament MVP Leanna Ludes posted 32 assists and 10 digs in the win.
Cal State Northridge plays the last of three tournaments next weekend as the Matadors travel to Houston, Texas to compete in the Rice Invitational.
