LONG BEACH, Calif. - Following a solid night of hitting at Cal State Fullerton on Friday, Cal State Northridge saw its offense stifled on Saturday as the Matadors fell in straight sets (25-18, 25-13, 25-19) at Long Beach State.
After hitting .236 in a straight set sweep at Fullerton, the Matadors (11-11, 5-5 Big West) hit just .064 as a team against the 49ers while committing 23 hitting errors. Mahina Haina and Casey Hinger each had a team-high eight kills for Northridge with Hinger adding two digs and a pair of blocks. Una Siljegovic came off the bench to put down five kills while hitting a team-high .300.
The Matadors had no answer for Long Beach State (16-6, 10-2 Big West) which hit .322 on its way to its 10th straight win.
With the score tied at 11 in the opening set, the 49ers put together a 5-1 run to open up a comfortable 16-12 cushion. A Bre Mackie kill bumped the Long Beach lead to as many as five (21-16) before taking the set 25-18.
The 49ers bolted to an early 8-2 lead in set two and never looked back. Long Beach led by as many as eight at 20-12 before cruising home with the 25-13 win.
Northridge came out looking to force at least a fourth set by claiming 10 of the first 15 points in set three. An ensuing 6-1 Long Beach run cut the Matador lead to 11-10 and the 49ers eventually wrestled back the lead 13-12. From then on, Long Beach slowly began to pull away boosting a 16-13 cushion into a 25-19 final.
Alma Serna paced Long Beach State with a match-high 11 kills while hitting a robust .688. Caitlin Ledoux, who didn't play in the 49ers' 3-1 victory in The Matadome on Sept. 30, added nine kills (.231).
Cal State Northridge returns home for five of its final seven regular season matches beginning next Friday, Nov. 4 against UC Davis.
