EUGENE, Ore. - Cal State Northridge concluded competition at the NCAA West Preliminary Round Saturday as the Matadors sent their women's 1600 meter relay team and men's 400 meter relay team looking to advance to the NCAA Championships.
Unfortunately, CSUN came up empty on the final day of the meet as the women finished 18th while the men came in 20th. Individually, senior Desirae Gonder finished tied for 32nd in the high jump.
The women's 4x400 relay team of Sherrina Lofton, Precious Watkins, Desirae Gonder and Jackie Harrison, which came in with the meet ranked 15th with a season-best of 3:37.57, finished in 3:42.59 which was seventh in their heat and 18th overall. Only the top-12 teams advanced to the NCAA Championships.
The men's 4x100 team, which consisted of Sean Alfino, Carl Horsley, Darquis Rucker and David Reid, clocked a time of 42.09 which was seventh in heat two and 20th overall. The team came in with a season-best of 40.57 which ranked 21st in the region.
Gonder, a contender for the top women's athlete in the Big West this season, completed her career with a disappointing 32nd-place finish in the high jump. The Big West champion finished with a best height of 5-5 (1.65) after missing on all three attempts at 5-7 (1.70). Gonder's top jump this season was 5-10 (1.78) and her career-best was 6-0.50 (1.84).
The cold and wet Oregon weather may have been a difference maker for the Matadors over the last three days.
"We didn't handle the weather real well," said head coach Don Strametz. "We thought we had a chance in the mile relay today, we just came up short."
Lofton will represent Cal State Northridge in the heptathlon at the NCAA Championships June 8-11 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.
