Tough Day For Matadors on Day One of NCAA West Preliminary Round

May 26, 2011

EUGENE, Ore. - It was a tough day for Cal State Northridge track & field at the NCAA West Preliminary Round Thursday as the Matadors entered five events and failed to advance in all five. Lilyana Morejon's 27th-place finish in the 10,000 meters was a CSUN best.

Junior Ashley Frazier opened the day for the Matadors in the 400 meter hurdles and ran 1:01.06 to finish seventh in her heat and 34th overall. Only the top-24 advanced the next round of qualifying.

Senior Desirae Gonder was next as she competed in her first of the three events at the meet. In the long jump, Gonder had a decent jump on her first attempt, 18-1 (5.51) but fouled on her next jump and then posted a disappointing 17-7 on her third attempt and wound up 42nd. Only the top-18 advanced to the next round.

Junior Jackie Harrison, running her first 400 meter race at the NCAA Prelims, clocked a time of 55.88 and finished sixth in her heat and 36th overall. Only the top-24 times moved on.

In the final women's race of the night, senior Lilyana Morejon ran a season-best 34:48.61 to finish 27th in the grueling 10,000 meters. Her time eclipsed the 34:52.46 she ran earlier this season at the Cal State LA Twilight Open. The top-12 in the 10,000 meters advanced directly to the NCAA Championships.

In the only race for CSUN on the men's side, freshman Carl Horsley finished seventh in his heat of the 100 meters in a time of 10.71. Horsley, who came in with a season-best 10.55, finished 34th in the field. Only the top-24 advanced to the second round of qualifying.

Five Matadors will get the chance to advance on Friday as Michael Woodham competes in the 110 hurdles at 3:25 p.m., Thomas Johnson competes in the high jump at 3:45 p.m., Tiana Webberley competes in the pole vault at 4 p.m. and Horsley and David Reid are entered in the 200 meters at 6:10 p.m.
