Robert Robinson Leads Big West Decathlon After Day One; Sherrina Lofton Second in Heptathlon

IRVINE, Calif. - Cal State Northridge junior Robert Robinson leads the decathlon and fellow junior Sherrina Lofton is in second place in the heptathlon at the conclusion of day one of each event Friday at Anteater Stadium.

Robinson, the runner-up in the decathlon at the conference championships in each of the last two seasons, holds a 158-point lead over Cal Poly's Corbin Duer after five events.

The Matadors also have four other competitors in scoring contention as Lance Gonzales is in third with 3,747 points, Michael Woodham is fifth with 3,517 points, Owen Morse is sixth with 3,496 points and Jonathan Talkington is eighth with 3,315 points.

Robinson won the first event of the day, the 100 meters as he ran a 10.82 to earn 901 points. He finished third in the long jump (7.06), fifth in the shot put (39-10), fifth in the high jump (6-3.50) and closed the day with a first-place finish in the 400 meters (49.59). Gonzales had an impressive first-place finish in the high jump (6-7) while Morse was second in the shot put (42-2) and Woodham was second to Robinson in the 100 after running 10.87.

In the heptathlon, Lofton is just 22 points behind day one leader Barbara Nwaba of UC Santa Barbara. Lofton earned 3,228 points and is second while Shelese Ruffin is currently sixth with 2,844 points and Stella Dugall is eighth with 2,764 points.

Lofton took fourth in the 100 meter hurldes to open the day as she ran 14.95. Dugall, a hurdles specialist, won the event at 14.41. Lofton then finished third in the high jump clearing 5-5.25, was third in the shot put at 35-11.25 and completed day one with a first-place finish in the 200 meters (23.99). Ruffin was second in the 200 at 24.38.

Saturday's program kicks off with the last five decathlon events at 11 a.m. with the final day of the heptathlon commencing at 1 p.m.
