Matadors Travel to Seattle For MPSF Indoor Championships

MATADORS TRAVEL TO SEATTLE FOR 2009 MPSF INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS The Cal State Northridge track & field team is in the homestretch of the 2009 indoor season as the Matador men and women head to the MPSF Indoor Championships this week. The MPSF Championships get underway on Friday, Feb. 27 with the women's weight throw at 12:30 p.m. The first event on the track will be the women's 60 meter hurdles final as part of the pentathlon. The final event on Saturday is the women's 4x400 meter relay which is scheduled for 3 p.m.

THE MPSF CHAMPIONSHIP FIELD Ten of the West's top track and field programs participate in MPSF Championships competition in indoor track and field. School's competing include eight of the Pac-10's nine track and field programs: Arizona, Arizona State, California, Oregon, Stanford, UCLA, Washington, Washington State. The Matadors and Long Beach State respresent the Big West.

THE 2008 MPSF INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS The 12th-ranked Oregon men won the 2008 MPSF title with 90 points, followed by Cal with 84.5, No. 24 Stanford with 83, No. 1-ranked Arizona State with 77, and Washington in fifth-place with 66.5 points. It was the first MPSF title for the Ducks, who snapped the UW men's streak of conference titles at two. Second-ranked Arizona State held off No. 3 Stanford to take the women's crown for the second year in a row. No. 20 Oregon was third with 72 points, Cal placed with with 65.5, and 16th-ranked Washington was right behind in fifth with 61.5.

NORTHRIDGE MPSF INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIP NOTES The Matadors last won an conference indoor championship in 2007, when the Northridge women scored 165 points to claim the Western Athletic Conference crown ... The Matador women also finished first in the Big Sky in 1999 and were third on three different occasions (1997, 1998, 2000) ... the Northridge men finished as the runner-up in the Big Sky in 1998 and 2001 ... last season, the Matadors eighth on the women's side (38.50 points and ninth on the men's side (49) ... among the Matador returners, Reindell Cole finished a Northirdge-best second in the long jump while Desirae Gonder finished third in the high jump at last season's indoor championships ... Thomas Ross, a senior in 2008, won the men's 60 meter hurdles ... Northirdge will send a total of 40 student-athletes (21 men, 19 women) to the meet ... Matador head coach Don Strametz had this to say about the upcoming MPSF Championships: "The big thing for us will be to try and get as many as five or six individuals qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships," said Strametz. "They certainly have the opportunity to qualify and they're ready to go, we'd also like to get the women's mile relay into the national championship."
