Matador Women Claim 2010 Cal-Nevada Championship

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Following a solid effort on day one, the Cal State Northridge women posted a total of 98 points to win their first Cal-Nevada Championship in eight years Sunday at UCLA's Drake Stadium.

The Matador women won just one event at the championships, Lilyana Morejon's win in the 10,000 meters on Saturday, but scored well in enough events to claim the title by 15 points over Cal State Fullerton.

In Sunday's finals, Jasmine Cox took second in the 800 meters running a personal-best 2:10.75. Cox further lowered her best after running 2:12.58 in Saturday's prelims.

The Northridge 4x400 relay team of Sierra Brooks, Brenna Hoffman, Cox and Crystal Spears also picked up eight points with a second place finish in a season-best time of 3:46.81.

Also scoring for the Matadors on Sunday:

- Sierra Brooks ran 12.31 to finish eighth in the 100 meters (2 points)

- LaShandra Batiste and Vanice Colbert finish fifth and sixth in the 400 meter hurdles. Batiste ran 62.40 to earn five points while Colbert ran 63.09 to pick up four points.

- The 4x100 team of Precious Watkins, Shelese Ruffin, Batiste and Spears ran 47.12 to finish ninth and earn one point.

- Whitney Hooks posted a mark of 45-11.75 in the shot put to finish sixth and earn four points.

- Claire Morgan threw 143-8 (46.32) to finish seventh in the discus, earning another three points while Morgan Bogard (142-4) was ninth to pick up one point.
