CSUN Wraps Up Day One of NCAA West Preliminary Round
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Cal State Northridge completed its first day of competition Thursday at the NCAA West Preliminary Round at John McDonnell Stadium.
Marissa Rossi opened the day for the Matadors in the long jump as the sophomore finished 27th with a best of 19-2 (5.84). Rossi's top jump came on her second attempt but it was not enough to earn a spot in the top-16 which would have given her three additional jumps.
Rossi will open her second event of the meet Friday as she in one of three CSUN competitors in the triple jump beginning at 2 p.m.
Senior Tiana Webberley, in her fourth NCAA Regional meet, got off to a good start clearing her second attempt at 12-3.25 (3.74) before moving up to 12-9 (3.89). Again, Webberley converted her second attempt which moved her up to 13-3 (4.04). But the all-time CSUN record holder missed on three attempts at what would have been a season-best, setting for 24th-place.
In the evening sprints, Jordan Taylor finished sixth in his heat of the 100 meters clocking a time of 10.61. Taylor wound up 30th in the field of 48 sprinters.
Neither of the two CSUN women in the 100 were able to advance either as Le'Shel Vines took fifth in her heat at 11.80 and Marie Veale finished eighth in her heat at 12.10. Vines wound up 28th in the field while Veale was 42nd.
Veale still has the first round of the 200 meters coming up Friday evening while both Vines and Veale will be part of the Matador relays.
Competition continues Friday as Monique Griffith will open the day in the discus at 1 p.m.
