Northridge Tennis Excels at Matador Invitational

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge women's tennis team closed out its 2010 fall season with an impressive showing in the Matador Invitational, which was held at the Matador Tennis Complex from Nov. 12-14. In the event, CSUN excelled in both doubles and singles play, taking several tournament championships in the process.
In singles action, Brooke Doane finished runner-up in the top flight, defeating several notable opponents before falling in the final. On Saturday, Nov. 12, Doane toppled seeded opponents from Pepperdine (Arianna Colffer; 4-6, 7-6, 6-2) and Arizona (Sarah Landsman; 7-5, 6-4) to take her to the finals. However, Landsman's teammate, Lacey Smyth, enacted some revenge to win the "A" draw in straight sets, 6-2 and 7-6.
On the consolation side of the "A" singles, Nina Jaworowski and Nigora Sirojiddinova overcame opening-round losses to post two victories each. Jaworowski defeated opponents from Cal State Fullerton and Montana, while Sirojiddinova took down two rivals from Montana.
Moving to the "B" singles, Maria Pistalu was the only Matador to win her opening-round match. However, on the consolation side of the draw, Ryma Korab defeated LMU's Shauna Morgan (6-2, 6-0) and Melissa Valenzuela (6-3, 6-1) in straight sets.
Finally, the "C" draw saw Lorraine Cheung win the bracket with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over UC Santa Barbara's Casey Reede. En route to the victory, she also defeated opponents from Cal State Bakersfield, Pepperdine and Cal State Fullerton.
In doubles action, the tandem of Sabrina Man-Son-Hing and Doane recorded victories over Cal State Fullerton and Arizona to reach the finals of the "A" draw. However, they fell 8-5 to Arizona' Natasha Marks and Sarah Landsman in the finals. Also in the draw, Sirojiddinoa and Jaworowski defeated April Bisharat and Elisaveta Pironkova, 9-7, in the opening round before falling to Landsman and Marks.
In the "B" draw, Anna Yang and Pistalu took the bracket championship with an 8-0 victory over UCSB's Erica Cano and Reede. They also defeated teams from Cal State Stanislaus and Cal State Fullerton.
Finally, Korab and Cheung made it to the finals of the "C" draw in doubles. They defeated teams from Cal State Bakersfield and UC Santa Barbara before falling to Montana's Ashley Mackey and Heather Davidson in the finals.
Northridge and head coach Gary Victor begin their 2011 spring schedule on January 14 with a home match against Nevada. First serve between the Matadors and Wolfpack is slated for noon at Matador Tennis Complex.
