The Cal State Northridge women's tennis team released its 2008-09 schedule, head coach Gary Victor announced Wednesday. In addition to meetings with five nationally ranked squads in 2008, including defending NCAA champion UCLA, the Matadors will host 16 matches at the Matador Tennis Complex.

"This is toughest schedule we have had in my tenure," said Victor. "We are very excited to have such a challenging slate of matches and have been working hard to prepare for another successful year of CSUN tennis."

First up for the Matadors is a meeting at defending NCAA champion UCLA on Jan. 21 at 1:30 p.m. Two days later, Northridge heads to Malibu to face Pepperdine, who finished the 2008 season ranked 25th in the nation.

On Jan. 31, the Matadors open Big West Conference play with a match at Cal Poly at 11 a.m. The next weekend sees CSUN on the road again, this time traveling to the Grand Canyon State to face Arizona State, who finished 2008 ranked 23rd in the country, and Arizona on Feb. 6 and 7, respectively.

The time on the road comes to halt following the trip to Arizona, as 16 of the team's next 17 matches are to be played at the Matador Tennis Complex. First up is a pair of matches against league opponents, Cal State Fullerton and UC Davis. The Matadors and Titans will meet on Feb. 10 at 2 p.m., then host the Aggies on Feb. 15 at 11 a.m.

The lone away contest during the streak occurs on Feb. 20 when CSUN plays at defending Big West champion Long Beach State at 2 p.m.

The next 14 matches, all at Matador Tennis Complex, offer a mixture of non-conference and league opponents to challenge Victor's team. The team hosts Hawai'i (2/22; 1 p.m.) and Louisiana-Lafayette (2/24; 2 p.m.) before returning to league competition with a match against UC Santa Barbara on Mar. 1 at noon.

Following the meeting with the Gauchos, the Matadors play four non-conference opponents in a six-day span: Temple (3/8; 1 p.m.), Southern Mississippi (3/9; 2 p.m.), Alabama-Birmingham (3/11; 2 p.m.) and Memphis (3/13; 2 p.m.). The team returns to league action on Mar. 15 when they host Pacific at 11 a.m.

After the Tigers visit town, CSUN continues to host non-conference opponents, playing three matches over the next eight days. First up is a meeting with Columbia (3/20; 2 p.m.), followed by a match with San Francisco (3/23; 2 p.m.) and a meeting with Dartmouth (3.25: 2 p.m.).

On Mar. 27, the Matadors welcome the UC Irvine Anteaters for a match at 2 p.m. and close out the homestand with matches against Harvard (3/28; noon) and Loyola Marymount (4/2; 2 p.m.).

A trip to UC Riverside on Apr. 7 at 2 p.m. closes out the regular season for the Matadors. Ten days later, on Apr. 17, the Big West Championships begin from Indian Wells, Calif.

"We are excited for the year to begin," added Victor. "With all these great home matches on the slate, fans will have plenty of opportunities to come out and support the squad as we work towards achieving our goals."
