NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Cal State Northridge women's tennis Head Coach Gary Victor has already had a busy summer, as he helped guide the San Fernando Valley Competition Training Center to a team championship in the Southern California CTC Team Cup. In other tennis news, Victor was also named the Chair of the Western Region ITA Coaches' Committee.
The title was the San Fernando Valley's first in the history of the event. The team, comprised of children from ages nine to 13, defeated squads from Bakersfield and San Gabriel Valley to reach the semifinals, where they recorded a win against the contingent from San Diego.
In the finals, Victor, who served as head coach for the squad, and the San Fernando Valley defeated an Orange County team that had won 10 of the last 11 championships. CSUN women's tennis assistant coach Zbynek Mlynarik served as an assistant coach on the squad as well.
"We had a great time and it was an absolutely wonderful experience," Victor said. "This is a great accomplishment for tennis in the San Fernando Valley."
In addition to the championship, Victor saw his role on the Western Region ITA Coaches' Committee expand as he was named Chair. After serving on the committee for two years, the appointment will allow Victor to have extended responsibilities, which include handling regional rankings, voting on All-American candidates and representing the region during the NCAA Tournament selection process
"I am excited to have the extra responsibility that goes along with being the chairman," Victor added. "It is nice to have the Big West Conference represented in the region and I think my appointment will benefit the league and our program tremendously."
With the Matadors, Victor recently concluded his 12th season as the head coach. In 2009, the Matadors finished 11-13 overall and earned the fourth seed in the Big West Championships. Three Matadors, Nina Jaworowski, Brooke Doane and Evgeniya Vertesheva, earned All-Big West honors following the season.
