Jennifer Sher Named Big West Tennis Athlete of the Week

April 27, 2011

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Cal State Northridge junior Jennifer Sher was named the Big West Conference Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday. In the Matadors' 5-2 victory over Pacific last week, Sher posted a straight-set victory in singles and teamed with Brooke Doane to win in No. 1 doubles.

Sher has not wasted any time making an impact on the courts in her first season with the Matadors. With the win over the Tigers' Julie Hansen (6-1, 6-0), Sher improved to a team-best 16-5 in singles matches in 2011. That record included a 6-2 mark against league opponents.

As good as she has been in singles, Sher has been even better in doubles play in 2011. For the season, she is 20-2 in doubles competition, including a sterling 15-1 record with Doane in No. 1 doubles. Against league foes, Sher posted a 7-1 record in doubles action.

A historical analysis of her doubles season reveals several notable accomplishments. At 20 doubles wins, Sher, and Doane at 20-4 as well, is one win shy of tying Shaheen Hhanji for the most doubles wins by an individual player in school history for a single season. Additionally, her .909 doubles winning percentage ties her for the second-best mark in school history.

As a tandem, Sher and Doane have certainly left an impact in the CSUN record books. Their 15 wins as a team is tied for the fourth-most in school history for a single season and for sixth in school history. Their .938 winning percentage as team ranks second in school history for a single season and in school history.

This is the second time in 2011 that Sher has earned Big West Tennis Athlete of the Week honors. Sher also earned the honors on Mar. 2 after helping lead the Matadors to a 3-1 record on a trip to Hawai'i. In the tropics, Sher finished 3-1 in singles action and a perfect 4-0 in doubles play.

Sher's head coach, Gary Victor, was happy to see Sher recognized yet again for her play on the court.

"It is nice to see Jennifer rewarded for all the hard work she has put in this year," Victor said. "She brings a great attitude every day and is a pleasure to coach."

Sher and the Matadors now set their sights on Cal Poly as part of the Big West Championships in Indian Wells, Calif. The two clubs will square off in a quarterfinals match on Friday, April 29.
