NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -
Juniors Nina Jaworowski and Whitney Paluch won a doubles title as the Cal State Northridge women's tennis team turned in several impressive performances at the Matador Invitational. In singles action, freshmen Anna Yang and Zarina Pisnoy both reached the semifinals of their respective singles draws, defeating opponents from several regional rivals.
Jaworowski and Paluch won the Doubles B Draw title after defeating Boise State's Rocio Frej and Marlena Pietzuch, 8-5. On their way to the title, they defeated teams from Cal State Fullerton, Concordia and Big West rival UC Santa Barbara. It was their second doubles title of the fall season.
In other doubles action, freshman Ryma Korab and Zarina Pisnoy reached the finals of Doubles C Draw before having to withdraw due to illness. To reach the finals, the rookies knocked off doubles teams from Cal State Stanislaus, Air Force and Concordia.
Finally, after losing their opening round match, Yang and junior Brooke Doane won twice in the consolation bracket for the Doubles A Draw. They defeated teams from Arizona and Air Force.
In singles aciton, Pisnoy and Yang both reached the semifinals of their respective draws. Yang wracked up victories in the Singles B Draw over opponents from The Master's College, Nevada and Concordia before losing to Boise State's Pietzuch.
Pisnoy won twice over the weekend in the Singles C Draw, defeating opponents from Cal State Bakersfield and Big West rival Cal State Fullerton. She lost in the semifinals to Air Force's Katrina Eromin.
In other singles action, Doane and Jaworowski both earned a victory in the Singles A Draw before losing in the second round. Paluch and Korab both lost their opening round match in the Singles B Draw, though both would earn victories in the consolation bracket.
The Matador Invitational concludes Northridge's fall schedule. The Matadors open their 2010 against UC San Diego on Feb. 6 at Matador Tennis Complex with first serve slated for 12:30 p.m.
