NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -
The Cal State Northridge women's tennis team picked up several tournament championships Saturday at the Second Annual Matador Invitational. Sophomores Nina Jaworowski and Whitney Paluch and freshmen Evgeniya Vertesheva and Nigora Sirijiddinova all won their respective brackets in both singles and doubles action.
Jaworowski captured the singles B flight title with a 6-4, 4-6 and 10-5 victory over BYU's Elle Carney. Earlier in the day, she took a 6-3, 3-6 and 6-4 decision from UCSB's Sofia Novak.
Paluch took home the hardware for the singles C bracket, defeating Fullerton's Shelly Injejkian in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-2. Earlier in the day, she defeated Fullerton's Leslie Bullock in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-2.
Freshmen Vertesheva and Sirijiddinova took home the doubles B flight title with an 8-4 victory over Tania Rice and Romina Nedakovic. Earlier in the day, they defeated Injejkian and Bullock in an 8-3 victory. Sirijiddinova also won the backdraw of the singles B bracket, rallying in three sets to defeat UCSB's Natalia Lozano, 0-6, 6-2 and 10-5.
In other action, senior Victoria Brymer and sophomore Brooke Doane lost in the second round of the doubles A bracket, 8-3, to eventual bracket winners Anamika Bhargava and Alex Liles of Pepperdine. Jaworowski and Paluch also lost in the second round, falling 8-5, to Rice and Nedakovic.
The tournament concludes the Matadors' 2008 fall season. Northridge opens the 2009 season on Jan. 21 when they travel to Westwood, Calif., to face defending NCAA champion UCLA. The first match at Matador Tennis Complex will be on Feb. 10, 2008 when the Matadors host Cal State Fullerton.
