No. 33 Long Beach State Hands CSUN 6-1 Loss

April 10, 2010

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge women's tennis team (10-7, 4-4) lost 6-1 to No. 33 Long Beach State Saturday afternoon at the Matador Tennis Complex. Northridge won the doubles point, but then saw the 49ers take all six singles matches.

The loss ends the Matadors' Big West season, giving them a 4-4 record. As it stands right now, CSUN will probably finish fifth in the Big West and have to face Cal Poly, UCSB or UC Irvine in the first round of the Big West Championships. That tournament is April 29-May 2 at Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, Calif.

Nina Jaworowski and Whitney Paluch won the second-seeded doubles match, 8-6, over Deborah Armstrong and Anais Dallara. At No. 3, Maria Pistalu and Nigora Sirojiddinova toppled Julie Luzar and Sarah Cantlay, 8-6.

In singles action, Paluch and Pistalu suffered tough, three-set losses in the No. 4 and 5 singles match, respectively. Paluch fell 3-6, 6-3, 10-8 to Rachel Manasse and Pistalu lost 3-6, 6-3 and 6-2 to Luzar.

The other four singles matches went to the 49ers in straight sets. In No. 1 doubles, Brooke Doane and Anna Yang fell 8-7 (5) to Jaklin Alawi and Manasse.

Up next for Northridge is a home match against the University of Portland on April 17. First serve from the Matador Tennis Complex is slated for noon.
