NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge tennis team (13-8, 2-4) defeated UC Riverside, 7-0, in a Big West Conference dual match Saturday afternoon. The Matadors lost only one set to the Highlanders on the day as CSUN registered its fifth win in its last six matches.
As the regular season draws to a close, the Matadors are building momentum as they gear up for the Big West Championships at the end of April. Saturday, the Matadors played their first road match since Feb. 26 and easily dispatched of the Highlanders.
In doubles play, Brooke Doane and Jennifer Sher, currently ranked No. 77 in the nation, outlasted UCR to post an 8-7 (5) victory in the No. 1 doubles contest. The duo is now 13-1 on the season, all at the top draw.
CSUN rolled to victory in the other two doubles matches. Maria Pistalu and Sabrina Man-Son-Hing teamed up to record an 8-5 victory at the second draw. In the third draw, Nigora Sirojiddinova and Anna Yang posted an 8-2 win to complete the doubles sweep.
As a team, CSUN is 46-17 (.730) in doubles matches this season, including a 17-4 mark in No. 1 doubles.
Moving to singles, Doane won her sixth-straight match in straight sets (6-2, 6-1) in the No. 1 draw. She is now 9-10 overall and 3-3 in her senior season in singles play.
For the second-straight match, Sher did not lose a game in winning 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 2 match. She is now a team-best 14-4 on the season. At No. 3, Pistalu captured a three-set victory (7-5, 1-6, 10-3) to improve to 10-5 on the season.
In the bottom half of the draw, Sirojiddinova took a 6-2, 6-3 decision in the fourth match. She is now 9-10 on the year as well in singles action. At No. 5, Yang won 6-3 and 6-0 to improve to 6-4 on the season. Finally, Lorraine Cheung duplicated Sher's line in winning 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 6 draw to improve to 12-5 on the season.
The Matadors return to action on April 10 when they host UC Irvine in a pivotal Big West Conference match. First serve from Matador Tennis Complex is slated for 12:30 p.m.
