Matador Tennis Posts 6-1 Victory over Pilots

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge women's tennis team (12-8) defeated Portland 6-1 Friday afternoon in a non-conference dual match at Matador Tennis Complex. The Matadors rolled to a sweep in doubles play and then reeled off five of the six singles matches.

As the season winds down, CSUN finds itself playing some of its best tennis of the year. Northridge has now won four of its past five matches with three of its final four contests against Big West opposition.

Friday, the Matadors jumped out to an early 1-0 lead by taking all three doubles matches. Brooke Doane and Maria Pistalu won their top-seeded doubles contest, 8-6. They are now 3-1 on the season, all at the No. 1 draw.

In the second doubles draw, the tandem of Jennifer Sher and Sabrina Man-Son-Hing won 8-2 to improve to 4-0 on the season. Finally, Nigora Sirojiddinova and Anna Yang moved to 4-1 on the year with an 8-2 victory in the No. 3 match.

Singles competition saw only five matches competed between the two teams. Doane recorded her fifth-straight win in singles play by winning 6-1 and 6-3 in the top draw. At No. 2, Sher did not lose a game in winning 6-0, 6-0. Doane is now 8-10 on the year while Sher moved to a team-best 13-4 in singles competition.

Sirojiddinova also won for the fourth time in six matches, improving to 8-10 on the year with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 4. Finally, Yang posted a 6-0, 6-0 victory in the No. 5 contest. She is now 5-4 on the season.

Pistalu was the only Matador to fall, dropping her third-seeded match in three sets: 5-7, 7-6 (4) and 11-9.

The Matadors host UC Riverside on April 2 at 11 a.m. in a return to league action.
