April 1, 2010

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge women's tennis team (8-5, 2-3 Big West) swept UC Riverside, 7-0, in a Big West match Thursday at the Matador Tennis Complex. Northridge rolled to the win, dropping only one set against the Highlanders in six singles matches.

Rebounding strongly from a disappointing loss to UC Santa Barbara, the Matadors set the early tone in doubles play. Anna Yang and Brooke Doane improved to 8-4 overall and 2-2 in league play with an 8-4 win over Nadia Sakhakorn and Donna McCullough in the No. 1 draw.

At No. 2, Nina Jaworowski overcame an ankle injury to team with Whitney Paluch to record an 8-1 win over Angelique Corpuz and Roxanne Plata. The duo is also 8-4 overall and 2-2 in league play.

Finally, Maria Pistalu and Nigora Sirojiddinova toppled Taylor Raney and Natalie McKay, 8-1. The freshman/sophomore tandem is now 9-2 overall and 3-1 in Big West matches, all at the third draw.

In singles, Pistalu overcame a 6-1 first-set loss to defeat Corpuz 6-2 and 11-9 at the fifth draw. In her rookie season, the freshman from Munich is 9-3 in singles play.

In the top singles match, Doane won for the second time in her last seven matches. She took a 6-3, 6-0 over Sakhakorn to give her a 7-6 record on the season as Northridge's No. 1 player.

Because of Jaworowski's absence in singles, Paluch moved to No. 2 and cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win against Raney. She is 6-7 on the year in singles play.

Sirojiddinova toppled McCullough 7-5, 6-1 in the No. 3 match. She is now 10-2 on the year in her second season at Northridge. At No. 4 Yang captured a 7-5, 6-3 decision over McKay to move her season record to an impressive 8-5 in her rookie season.

Finally, Pisnoy recorded her first career league win. She defeated Ayana Simmons 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 6 match. She is 2-1 on the season.

Northridge hopes to ride this victory into its match against Arizona on Friday, Apr. 2. The Matadors and Wildcats will tangle at the Matador Tennis Complex with the first serve slated for 1 p.m.
