Freshmen Lift Matadors to 4-3 Victory over Ragin Cajuns

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -

The Cal State Northridge women's tennis team (3-7) defeated Lousiana-Lafayette, 4-3, Tuesday afternoon at Matador Tennis Complex. Freshman Nigora Sirojiddinova won her No. 4 singles match over ULL's Marina Ruiz de Gauna in 6-3 in straight sets to secure the victory for the Matadors.

For Sirojiddinova, the win was her second of the week and third of the season. She teamed with Nina Jaworowski for their fourth win of the season as a doubles team, defeating Angela Dangond and Mia Gordon, 8-4.  

Northridge then won the doubles point after Brooke Doane and Evgeniya Vertesheva defeated Julie Mazinova and Milou Israel, 8-6, at the No. 1 position to improve their season record to 7-1. 

Julie Onishenko and Whitney Paluch lost their No. 3 doubles match, 8-5, to Tara Vasovic and Ruiz de Gauna.

In singles action, the Matadors won two of the top three matches. Vertesheva defeated Mazinova, 6-4 and 6-1, in the top match. Sophomore Nina Jaworowski won her second-seeded match, 6-4 and 6-2, over Israel.

However, the Ragin Cajuns won the third, fourth and sixth matches to earn three points. Doane and Paluch fell at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively, 6-3 and 7-6. Onishenko dropped the No. 6 match to Vasovic, 6-3 and 6-3.

The Matadors continue to serve host to incoming schools at Matador Tennis Complex. They host UC Santa Barbara in a Big West Conference match on Mar. 1 at noon.
