NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -
The Cal State Northridge tennis team (2-6) fell to No. 45 Long Beach State, 5-2, Friday in a Big West Conference match in Long Beach. Sophomore Nina Jaworowski won her No. 2 singles match and teamed with Nigora Sirojiddinova to win their No. 2 doubles match and help CSUN win the doubles point.
Playing against the 49ers’ Deborah Armstrong, Jaworowski rallied to win 3-6, 7-5 and 10-8 for her second singles win of the season. She and Sirojiddinova took an 8-3 decision over Armstrong and Lisa Sutton to improve their mark to 3-3 on the season.
In the top doubles match, Evgeniya Vertesheva and Brooke Doane improved their season record to 5-1 with an 8-3 victory over Hannah Grady and Jessica Weeks. At the No. 3 position, Anais Dallara and Rachel Manasse defeated Whitney Paluch and Julie Onishenko, 8-3.
In singles action, Grady defeated Vertesheva in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-0, to win the No. 1 match. At the third position, Manasse defeated Doane, 6-2, 6-0.
In the bottom half of the singles bracket, Paluch played at the No. 4 position for the first time in her career, but fell 6-4, 6-2 to Dallara. Sirojiddinova lost her No. 5 match 6-4, 6-2 to Julie Luzar and Onishenko fell to Weeks, 6-1 and 6-2 in the No. 6 match.
Northridge returns to action on Feb. 22 when they host Hawai’i at the Matador Tennis Complex. The match against the Rainbow Wahine is slated to start at 1 p.m. and opens a 13-match homestand for the Matadors.
