Sophomore Brooke Doane won her No. 3 singles match against Herzyl Legaspi to give the Cal State Northridge women’s tennis team (2-5, 2-1 BWC) Sunday afternoon at The Matador Tennis Complex. In addition to her singles win, Doane teamed with Evgeniya Vertesheva at the No. 1 doubles position with a win against Randi Schuler and Desiree Stone.
After dropping the first set 4-6, Doane won the last two sets 6-3 and 6-1 to rally past Legaspi. In their top doubles match, Doane and Vertesheva got an 8-1 victory over Schuler and Stone to improve to 4-1 on the season.
Helping Northridge secure the doubles point was the team of sophomore Nina Jaworowski and freshman Nigora Sirojiddinova. The duo got their second win of the season with an 8-3 win over Legaspi and Dahra Zamudio at the No. 2 position. In the third doubles match, Whitney Paluch and Julie Onishenko dropped an 8-3 decision to Jenna Kappel and Andrea Phillips.
In singles play, Vertesheva earned a 6-2, 6-0 win against Stone at the top position. At the No. 2 spot, Jaworowski fell in three sets to Zamudio in the second match: 6-2, 2-6 and 6-1.
In the bottom half of the bracket, Kappel defeated Sirojiddinova, 6-2, 6-0, at the No. 4 position. In the fifth spot, Paluch took home her second-straight victory with a 6-4, 6-3 decision against Jessica Harris. Finally, Emma Shapiro defeated Onishenko, 6-2, 6-4, at the No. 6 position.
The victory gives Northridge its second straight against a Big West Conference opponent. The Matadors return to the court on Feb. 20 for a trip to No. 45 Long Beach State. First serve is slated for 2 p.m.
