NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge women's tennis team (2-0) swept Cal State Stanislaus 7-0 in the Matadors' home opener Sunday at the Matador Tennis Complex. CSUN did not lose a set in its six singles matches against the Warriors.
Starting in doubles, the Matadors dispatched of CSUS by winning all three matches. At the No. 1 draw, Brooke Doane and Anna Yang defeated the team of Verena Preikschas and Katie Eng, 8-0. In the second draw, juniors Whitney Paluch and Nina Jaworowski battled to an 8-6 victory over Vanessa Reibstein and Arina Polovnikova.
Finally, Nigora Sirojiddinova and Maria Pistalu handed the team of Heather Cotter and Brianna McClintock an 8-5 decision in the No. 3 match.
In singles, Doane continued to to play at the No. 1 draw, defeating Preikschas, who retired down 3-0 in the first set. Jaworowski took a 7-6 (4) and 6-4 victory over Reibstein at the No. 2 position. Finally, Paluch recorded a 6-2, 6-4 decision over Eng at the third draw.
In the bottom half of the bracket, Yang won her No. 4 draw with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Polovnikova. At the fifth draw, Sirojiddinova bested Erin McGurty in straight sets, 6-0 and 6-2. Finally, Pistalu took care of McClintock in straight sets, 6-0 and 6-2.
Through two matches this year, CSUN has lost only one set in singles play and has yet to lose any of their doubles contests.
The Matadors return to the court Wednesday for their Big West Conference opener when they head to Orange County to face Cal State Fullerton. The match, which was postponed due to inclement weather last week, is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
