Jan. 14, 2011

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge women's tennis team (1-0) defeated Nevada, 4-3, Friday afternoon at the Matador Tennis Complex in its season opener. Senior Brooke Doane rallied from down 0-3 and 2-5 to win her No. 1 singles draw and help the Matadors post a victory over the Wolfpack.

Battling breezy conditions throughout the day, CSUN jumped out to an early 1-0 lead over Nevada by taking two of the three doubles matches. At the No. 2 draw, Nina Jaworowski and Anna Yang posted an 8-5 victory over Aodhnait Lombard and Michelle Okhremchuk. In the No. 3 match, Nigora Sirojiddinova and Lorraine Cheung defeated Gabriella Eufrasio and Sophie Stevens, 8-1.

Nevada did score one doubles win as Lais Ogata and Emma Verberne toppled Doane and Sabrina Man-Son-Hing, 8-3, in the No. 1 doubles draw.

Moving on to singles, CSUN captured wins at the first, fifth and sixth draws to earn the decisive points. After falling behind to Verberne, Doane rallied to win 6-3 and 7-5 at the No. 1 draw.

Cheung was the first Matador to finish, posting a 6-1 and 4-2 decision over Stevens at the No. 6 draw before the Nevada player was forced to retire from the match. Finally, Yang captured a 6-4 and 6-0 victory over Eufrasio in the No. 5 match.

In other singles action, Jaworowski lost 6-4 and 6-1 to Okhremchuk at the No. 2 draw while Sirojiddinova lost 6-4 and 6-0 to Ogata at the No. 3 draw. The last match to finish was the fourth draw, where Lombard posted a 7-5, 4-6, 10-7 win over Man-Son-Hing.

Matador head coach Gary Victor was impressed by his team's season-opening performance.

"I think today's win was truly a testament to our depth as a team. This year's squad is as deep and talented as any we've had at Northridge, including when we won the Big Sky Championship," Victor said. "Brooke and Nina showed why they are outstanding seniors and captains, taking a pair of crucial points for us that ultimately helped us defeat a talented Nevada squad."

For their next match, CSUN heads to Los Angeles to face the No. 19 USC Trojans. First serve from the campus of Southern California is slated for 1:30 p.m. on Jan. 18.
