CSUN Women's Tennis Coaches Help San Fernando Valley Claim CTC Cup

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. ---

CSUN women's tennis coaches Gary Victor and James Ciuffo helped lead the San Fernando Valley to the SCTA Competition Training Center Team Cup at the Claremont Club in the San Gabriel Valley earlier this month.

A team competition between the six CTCs in Southern California, Victor, the team's head coach, and Ciuffo, one of three assistant coaches, helped guide the Valley to 24-16 victory over Ventura/Santa Barbara in the semifinals and a 26-15 victory over the host San Gabriel Valley in the finals.

Each contest featured 20 singles matches, 10 doubles matches and 10 mixed doubles matches for a total of 40 points per contest.

"Getting to work with the top junior players in Southern California is not only fun, but great access and exposure for our program," Victor said. "Winning the team cup in the toughest section of the country is icing on the cake."

Victor and Ciuffo led a group of 13-and-under players to the Valley's third title in the last six competitions. The tournament features the best players in Southern California in each region.

Having just completed his 17th season at the helm of Matador Tennis, Victor led CSUN to a 12-10 overall mark in 2014. Ciuffo has served as the Matadors' assistant coach during all but one season of Victor's tenure.

After the year, four Matadors, including three freshmen, were named to the 2014 All-Big West Conference Team: Vivian Lin, Mickey Hsu, Kristen Poei and Criss Rodriguez.

Additionally, senior Lorraine Cheung won the ITA Southwest Region Arthur Ashe Award for Sportsmanship and Leadership.
