NORTHRIDGE, Calif. ---
Fresh off her first pair of intercollegiate matches, Cal State Northridge women's tennis freshman Vivian Lin was named the Big West Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday. Lin scored a pair of singles victories, including the decisive point in the Matadors' victory over Air Force, and recorded two doubles wins with Criss Rodriguez at the No. 1 draw.
Lin made her Matador debut in a 7-0 sweep of Westmont in the season opener on Jan. 25. The rookie from Hong Kong teamed with Rodriguez to win 8-1 in doubles. She then posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory in the No. 2 singles match.
The next day, Lin was instrumental in helping the Matadors defeat the Falcons.
In doubles, she teamed with Rodriguez once again to produce an 8-5 decision in the top doubles match. After falling behind a set in the top singles draw, Lin stormed back to win 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (2). That point helped CSUN seal the 4-3 victory and cap off a perfect opening weekend.
"Vivan has matured leaps and bounds since the beginning of the fall. She has found a way to bring out her love for the game and competition," CSUN head coach Gary Victor said. "She deserves the recognition and we are thrilled for her."
Lin and the Matadors return to the courts for their first taste of Big West action Saturday, Feb. 1 with a home match against Cal Poly. First serve is slated for noon from Matador Tennis Complex.
