Matador Tennis Opens 2014 Season with Sweep of Westmont

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. ---

The Cal State Northridge women's tennis team (1-0) opened its 2014 season with a 7-0 sweep over Westmont Saturday afternoon at Matador Tennis Complex. The Matadors lost only two games in sweeping two doubles matches and then did not drop a set in singles play.

Head coach Gary Victor unveiled a line-up full of newcomers to the program Saturday. Criss Rodriguez won 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 1 singles draw and teamed with freshman Vivian Linto win 8-1 in top doubles action. Lin won 6-2, 6-2 in straight sets in the second draw.

Fellow freshmen Mickey Hsu and Kristen Poei each won in straight sets in the third and fourth draw, respectively. Two returning players, senior Lorraine Cheung and sophomore Jessica Warren, teamed to win the No. 2 doubles contest 8-1.

Cheung then won in singles at No. 5 with a 6-0, 6-1 decision. There was no No. 6 singles match played.

CSUN returns to action Sunday, Jan. 26 with a contest against Air Force. First serve at Matador Tennis Complex is slated for 10:30 a.m.
