NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The Cal State Northridge women's tennis team (9-6, 2-3 Big West) lost 5-2 to UC Irvine Sunday afternoon in a Big West Conference match in Orange County. After sweeping the three doubles matches and jumping out to an early 1-0 lead, the Matadors could not keep the momentum going in singles play.
CSUN went ahead 1-0 in the match after winning all three doubles contests. Sabrina Man-Son-Hing and Jennifer Sher improved to 10-4 at the No. 1 draw with an 8-2 victory. Nigora Sirojiddinova and Anna Yang moved to 8-6 with their 8-4 victory at the No. 2 draw and Maria Pistalu and Lorraine Cheung won 8-4 as well to improve to 8-4 on the year as a tandem.
However, the lead would be short lived as the Anteaters settled into a grove in singles play and won five of the six matches in straight sets. The only Matador to earn a point in singles was Yang, who won 6-2, 6-7 and 10-4 in her fifth-seeded draw. She is now 8-6 on the season in singles play and has won her last three matches.
CSUN remains on the road for its next two contests, a pair of pivotal Big West contests. On April 4, the Matadors face UC Davis at 2 p.m, then take on Pacific on April 5 at 3:30 p.m.
The Matadors' home finale is slated for April 15, a Big West match against Cal Poly at 11 a.m.
