NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The Cal State Northridge women's tennis team saw some great individual performances this past weekends in a pair of fall preseason tournaments. The Matadors were led by junior Anna Yang at the Gaucho Classic and by Sabrina Man-Son-Hing at the Cal State Fullerton Invitational.
On the campus of Big West Conference rival UC Santa Barbara, Yang turned in an excellent weekend competing in the Singles B bracket. Yang toppled opponents from Colorado State, Wyoming and Cal Poly in straight sets before falling in the bracket finals to Sasha Nemcova of Wyoming.
Senior Nigora Sirojiddinova, freshmen Marjani Simmons and Shelby Sinoway and sophomore Lorraine Cheung also competed for Northridge in Santa Barbara. Cheung opened up her weekend by unseating UCSB's Jordan Dockendorf, the second seed in the B bracket, in straight sets.
In doubles, Cheung and Simmons took an 8-5 victory over a pair of Gauchos in the B bracket. Yang and Sirojiddinova would also perform well, capturing the consolation side of the B doubles bracket by defeating teams from Cal Poly and LMU.
In Orange County, Man-Son-Hing played some outstanding tennis by defeating two opponents from the University of Oregon (Lana Buettner, Patricia Skowronski) in straight sets before a third Duck could finally stop her.
Maria Pistalu also competed in Fullerton, posting wins over opponents from UC Riverside and Portland State before falling to the same Duck that did Man-Son-Hing in. BreJohn McCrary, Amber Walker, Jennifer Sher and Ryma Korab also saw action in singles in Fullerton.
In doubles, Sher and Man-Son-Hing took out a team from UC Irvine before falling to a duo from Long Beach State. After losing in the opening round, the team of Pistalu and McCrary posted wins over Oregon and two over Portland State. In the finals, they toppled a pair from the host Titans to win the consolation side of the bracket.
The team's next action will come at the ITA Western Regional in San Diego from Oct. 27-29. Northridge will also host The Matador Invitational from Nov. 11-13 at the Matador Tennis Complex to close out the fall season.
