The Cal State Northridge softball program released its 2009 schedule, head coach Barbara Jordan announced Monday. In addition to the challenges of the Big West Conference, the Matadors will participate in five preseason tournaments, including the Worth Invitational, which will be hosted at Matador Diamond.

"Overall, I am excited about our schedule. It is going to get us ready for conference," said Jordan. "We have a mixture of powerful schools and mid-majors to prepare us for the Big West and I believe the league is wide open this year, so if we approach the season the way we approached our fall schedule, we will find success."

Northridge opens the 2009 season at the Cathedral City Kickoff on Friday, Feb. 6, when it plays Liberty (10:30 a.m.) and Fordham (5:30 p.m.). The next day, the Matadors take on Georgia (12:30 p.m.) and Wisconsin (3 p.m.). On Feb. 7, CSUN closes out the tournament with contests against Southern Illinois (9 a.m.) and Fresno State (11 a.m.).

After a few days off, Northridge heads to El Paso, Texas to participate in a tournament hosted by the University of Texas-El Paso. On Feb. 19, CSUN faces Northern Colorado (2 p.m.) and New Mexico State (4 p.m.). The next day brings games against San Jose State (11 a.m.) and host UTEP (1:30 p.m.). The final day of the tournament, Feb. 21, has Northridge battling Samford (9 a.m.).

The Matadors return to California for its next tournament, participating in the Long Beach State Tournament on Feb. 27, 28 and Mar. 1. For the second time in the young season, the Matadors will face Wisconsin on Feb. 27 at 1:15. The next day, Feb. 28, the Matadors face Iowa State (11 a.m.) and BYU (1:15 p.m.). On the final day of the tournament, the Matadors usher in March with another game against Wisconsin (10:45 a.m.) and face Fresno State (1 p.m.).

On Mar. 6 -8, the Matadors welcome Rutgers, Portland State and Quinnipiac to Matador Diamond for the Worth Invitational. The Matadors play a doubleheader against Rutgers on Mar. 6 starting at 3 p.m. On Mar. 7, Northridge faces Portland State (9 a.m.) and Quinnipiac (11 a.m.). The Matadors close out the Worth Invitational against Portland State on Mar. 8 at 1 p.m.

Jordan and the team take a break from the tournaments on Mar. 10 when they welcome the University of Texas Longhorns to Matador Diamond for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.

Following the games against Texas, Northridge travels down the California coast to participate in the San Diego Classic. On Mar. 13, Northridge faces Big 12 Conference opponents Texas Tech (11:30 a.m.) and Oklahoma State (2 p.m.). The next day, Mar. 14, has CSUN battling Miami of Ohio (11:30 a.m.) and another Big 12 foe, Iowa State (7 p.m.). The final day of the tournament has CSUN facing host San Diego State on Mar. 15 at 2 p.m.

One final non-conference series awaits the Matadors following their trip to San Diego, a doubleheader at Cal State Bakersfield on Mar. 21 starting at 1 p.m.

Northridge opens its 2009 Big West Conference schedule at home, hosting Pacific on Mar. 28 and 29, starting at noon both days. The next weekend takes CSUN back to Long Beach to face the 49ers, the defending league champions, on Apr. 4 and 5, also starting at noon. They then head to UC Santa Barbara for a league series on Apr. 10 and 11, also starting at noon.

Following the three-game series with the Gauchos, the Matadors return home for a three-game series with Cal Poly on Apr. 18 and 19. Senior day festivities, in which the team will honor its three seniors, Sarah Kahn-Shamout, Micah Putnam and Karen Fraggi, will commence around a three-game series with UC Riverside on Apr. 25 and 26.

The Matadors close out the 2009 regular season with a pair of roadtrips at Cal State Fullerton (May 2 and 3) and UC Davis (May 9 and 10). All Big West Conference series feature a doubleheader on the first day of the series and a single game the following day. All Northridge league games will start at noon on the scheduled day.
