NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -
The Cal State Northridge softball team has finalized its 2010 schedule, a slate of 51 games that will feature 25 contests against 17 different teams that participated in the 2009 NCAA Tournament. The schedule also boasts 26 home games for Northridge at Matador Diamond, including four Big West Conference series and a non-conference tournament.
"We are looking forward to another exciting, challenging season of softball," Assistant Coach Roni Sparrey said. "To be the best, you have to beat the best, and this schedule provides that opportunity. Having 26 home games, including a five-team tournament, is a great way to provide our fans with fun, competitive contests against very good opponents."
Northridge opens the year at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz., on the campus of Arizona State from Feb. 12-14. The first day of the tournament has CSUN squaring off with a pair of tournament teams, facing North Dakota State at 12:30 p.m. and Northwestern at 4:30 p.m. On Feb. 13, Northridge takes on Purdue at 4:30 p.m. and then plays defending National Champion Washington under the lights at 7 p.m. The Matadors' final day in Tempe has them battling Texas A&M at 9 a.m. and Oregon at 1:30 p.m.
Following the trip to the Grand Canyon State, CSUN travels to Los Angeles, Calif. to participate in the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament at UCLA. On Feb. 19, the team plays Portland State at 11 a.m. and the host Bruins at 4 p.m. On Feb. 20, CSUN gets another game with UCLA starting at 6:30 p.m. and closes out the tournament on Sunday, Feb. 21 with a 10 a.m. meeting with Portland State.
The Matadors' 11-game road trip to open the season concludes with a single game at San Diego State on Wednesday, Feb. 24. The game time will be announced later.
Northridge's 2010 home opener takes place during the 2010 Matador Invitational. From Mar. 5-7, Matador Diamond will host Iowa, Cal State Bakersfield, Saint Mary's and Santa Clara in a five-team event. On Mar. 5, CSUN plays the Hawkeyes twice, beginning with a 1 p.m. game, with a second contest following its conclusion. On Mar. 6, Northridge has a single game, facing Santa Clara at 3 p.m. The Matadors then close out the tournament on Mar. 7 with a 1 p.m. game against the Gaels and a 3 p.m. meeting with the Roadrunners.
The brief home stand concludes with a single game against Notre Dame on Wednesday, Mar. 10 at 1:30 p.m. Senior Amanda Pitzenberger's sister, Sadie, is a junior on the Fighting Irish.
For its final tournament of the preseason, Northridge travels to Fresno State to participate in the Bayer CropScience Classic from Mar. 11-14. The Matadors open the event on Thursday with a contest against Colorado State at 4:30 p.m. The next day has CSUN facing Georgetown at 9 a.m. and East Tennessee State at 11:30 a.m. On Saturday, the Matadors renew acquaintances with the host Bulldogs in a 4:30 p.m. meeting. Northridge wraps up its stay in Fresno with a Sunday contest against Mississippi State and Team USA Head Coach Jay Miller at 9 a.m.
The Matadors return home for five non-conference games at Matador Diamond before the start of league play. On Mar. 16, they play North Dakota at 2 p.m., then follow that up the next day with a game against the Oklahoma Sooners at 3 p.m. On Mar. 18, Northridge hosts Louisville at 3 p.m., and a week later, on Mar. 25, faces Utah in a doubleheader starting at noon.
April brings the start of Big West Conference play. The Matadors open their 2010 league slate with two home series, beginning with three games against UC Davis. On Apr. 2, the teams play a doubleheader starting at noon and then a single game also at noon on Apr. 3. On April 10, Northridge squares off with Long Beach State at Matador Diamond in a doubleheader starting at noon and then plays the 49ers in a single game on April 11 also at noon.
The first league road trip of the season sends CSUN to Stockton to face Pacific for a doubleheader on Apr. 17 starting at noon and a single game on Apr. 18 at noon.
Northridge returns home following their series with Pacific to face UC Santa Barbara at Matador Diamond. On Apr. 24, the Matadors and Gauchos will play a doubleheader starting at noon and a single game on Apr. 25, also at noon.
CSUN then hits the road for one final time, playing three games at Cal Poly and UC Riverside. The Mustangs host Northridge for a doubleheader on May 1 starting at noon and a single game the next day at noon. The Highlanders await CSUN for a doubleheader on May 8 at noon and a single game on May 9 at noon.
The final Big West Conference series of the season pits Northridge against Cal State Fullerton. The Titans arrive at Matador Diamond for a doubleheader on May 14 starting at noon and Senior Day will feature a noon meeting between the teams.
