NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Cal State Northridge junior Debbie Duran earned Big West Pitcher of the Week honors, the Big West Conference announced Monday. Last week, Duran posted a 6-0 record with a 0.76 ERA and a 0.89 WHIP while holding opponents to a .168 batting average.
Northridge finished the week 6-1, picking up victories over Texas at Matador Diamond and going 5-0 at the San Diego Classic II. At the event, Duran won all five games for Northridge, including victories over Oklahoma State, Iowa State and San Diego State.
"I feel honored to receive the recognition and award," said Duran. "We are really going strong right now and if we keep doing the little things, we are going to be a tough team to beat."
Her victories against Texas Tech, Miami (OH) and San Diego State were all complete game efforts. She also made two relief appearances at the event, allowing not hits in a combined eight innings against Oklahoma State and Iowa State.
Duran now leads the Big West Conference with 13 wins and stands at 13-5 with a 1.55 ERA and 53 strikeouts in 103.2 innings of work. She also leads all Big West pitchers in innings pitched and appearances (22).
"Debbie did an outstanding job this week and helped lead the team to some important victories," Matador Head Coach Barbara Jordan said. "To play against that quality of opponents and finish with an ERA under 1.00 is quite an accomplishment."
She shared the award with Ari Cervantes of Cal State Fullerton. The Titans' Samantha Dollarhide won Big West Player of the Week.
The Matadors were the only team at the San Diego Classic II not to lose a game and earn the tournament's championship. CSUN is now 15-3 over their last 18 games and returns to action on Mar. 21 for a doubleheader at Cal State Bakersfield. The first game is slated to start at 1p.m.
