March 1, 2010

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Senior Christina Saenz was named Big West Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday. Originally from San Jose, Saenz hit .571 in the Matadors' four contests last week, helping the team to four big victories.

"It feels great to receive the honor and I want to thank my teammates and coaches for their hard work and support," Saenz said. "I think the way we played this past week definitely gives us confidence moving forward in the season. The trip to San Diego helped turn things around and I am excited to be staying at Matador Diamond this weekend for our home tournament."

In addition to the batting average, Saenz finished the week with five runs scored, four RBIs, two home runs and a double. For the season, Saenz is batting a team-high .378 and she also leads the team in hits (14), home runs (2), total bases (22), slugging percentage (.595) and on-base percentage (.452).

In the Matadors' trip to San Diego State, a game in which they won 5-4 in eight innings, Saenz was 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and a double.

On Sunday, Feb. 28, Sanez finished 6-for-10 at the plate as the Matadors rolled to a tripleheader sweep of Michigan State at Matador Diamond. She blasted the two home runs during the games and added three runs scored and three RBIs on the day.

"Christina really stepped up her game for us this week," Associate Coach Roni Sparrey said. "She gave us some clutch hits when we needed them and played a big part in our four victories."

This is the third time in Saenz's career that she has been named Big West Player of the Week. She earned the award twice during her freshman season in 2007.

Saenz, Sparrey and the rest of the Matadors return to action this weekend when they host the Matador Invitational. Iowa, Santa Clara, Saint Mary's and Cal State Bakersfield will converge on Matador Diamond for a three-day tournament running from Mar. 5-7.

Northridge plays Iowa twice on Friday, then faces Santa Clara Saturday. CSUN closes out the tournament with a game against Saint Mary's and Cal State Bakersfield on Sunday.
