With opening day just a few weeks away, the Cal State Northridge softball team received votes in the 2010 USA Today/NFCA Preseason Poll released Tuesday. With 13 letterwinners and eight starters returning, Northridge received six votes in the initial poll, becoming the third Big West squad to receive the distinction.

"It is humbling to be mentioned and receive votes in the first poll of the year," Associate Coach Roni Sparrey said. "Now we have to go out and prove that we belong in the same group as a bunch of very talented teams, some of whom we'll see on the diamond this season."

A glance at the initial poll shows Northridge will have plenty of opportunities to prove its worth. The Matadors will play a total of 22 games against 15 teams mentioned in the poll, including defending national champion and preseason No. 1 Washington. Nine of those games will come at Matador Diamond.

The first six games for Northridge takes them to Tempe, Ariz., to compete in the Kajikawa Classic hosted by Arizona State. In addition to facing the Huskies at the event, CSUN will also face four teams mentioned in the poll: North Dakota State (Received Votes), No. 15 Northwestern, Purdue (RV) and Texas A&M (RV).

Following the trip to Arizona, the team will compete in the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament on the campus of UCLA with two games against the No. 8 Bruins. The competition continues when CSUN heads to Fresno State's Bayer CropScience Classic from Mar. 11-14, when they face No. 25 Fresno State (Mar. 13) and Mississippi State (RV).

At home, Northridge will host No. 11 Oklahoma for a doubleheader (Mar. 17), No. 22 Louisville, Iowa (RV) and Cal State Fullerton (RV) for the final three games of the season. Northridge is one of three Big West teams in the poll, with Cal Poly receiving 37 votes and Cal State Fullerton getting 17 votes.
