NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge softball team (21-31, 9-11 Big West) split a doubleheader against Cal State Fullerton on Friday afternoon at Anderson Family Field. Northridge fell 6-2 in the first contest before scoring a 3-0 decision in game two.

Game One Recap

The Matadors dropped game one, 6-2, of the doubleheader Friday afternoon. Tracy Allen hit her seventh home run of the season, a two-run shot, to plate the Matadors only runs of the game.

Fullerton scored a run in both the first and second inning off CSUN starter Hannah Fraijo. In the second, the Matadors stifled a Titan rally when Kristen Mihm cut down the final out at the plate.

After the Titans added four in the bottom of the fifth, CSUN got two runs back in the sixth. Mikayla Thielges drew a one-out walk and then scored on a two-run home run by Tracy Allen, her seventh of the season.

For Allen, the home run was the 18th of her career, tying her with Tamara Ivie for ninth in school history. The two RBIs raised her season total to 29 and career mark to 89, tying her with Christina Saenz for eighth in school history.

Cervantes took the win for the Titans, tossing a complete game with two earned runs and three strikeouts. Fraijo took the loss for CSUN, dropping to 12-12 after giving up six earned runs.

Game Two Recap

The Matadors won a pitchers' duel when Madeline Sale drove a two-out, three-run home run, the first of her career, down the left field line to lift CSUN to a 3-0 victory. Carly Wade got out of several jams to earn her first career shutout in the win.

In the top of the seventh, Jaci Carlsen led off the inning with a double to left-center, her 12th two-bagger of the season. That figure ties her for 10th in school history for a single season.

That started a dramatic ending for the Matadors. Carlsen was tagged out on a fielder's choice and Mikayla Thielges grounded into another to put two outs on the board. Tracy Allen then laced a single to right field and Madeline Sale delivered a three-run home run down the left-field line to give CSUN a 3-0 lead.ama

"It was pretty amazing to get that hit in that spot. I wasn't sure whether it was going to stay fair, so I just put my head down and ran toward first," Sale said.

In the bottom of the seventh, Fullerton got a lead-off base hit, but could not do anything else as Wade nailed down her first career shutout.

Despite scattering 10 hits, Wade got some timely defense and made some tough pitches to post CSUN's first shutout of the 2011 season. She improved to 7-15 and tied a season high with five strikeouts.

Samantha Sloniker had two key defensive assists from the outfield. In the second, she gunned down Torrie Anderson at the plate on a single to end the inning. In the third, she threw out Ashley Carter at second when the Titan tried to stretch a single into a double.

In the fourth, Fullerton loaded the bases with one out. However, Wade induced a pair of groundouts to end the threat. Thielges caught Adriana Martinez stealing in the sixth and the Matador defense snuffed out several tough plays as well.

Katey Laban took the loss for Cal State Fullerton. She went all six innings and had two strikeouts.

The Matadors and Titans will play a single game on Saturday, May 14 at Anderson Family Field with first pitch slated for noon.
