NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge softball team (16-25, 3-6 Big West) fell 5-1 to Pacific Sunday afternoon in the finale of a three-game Big West Conference series at Matador Diamond. Mikayla Thielges blasted her league-leading 11th home run of the season, but the Matadors could not string together much else against the Tigers' Nikki Armagost.
Thielges, a sophomore catcher from Las Vegas, Nev., scored CSUN's only run of the game on a towering shot to left field to lead off the bottom of the sixth. That total ties her with two other Matadors for sixth in school history for a single season.
She now also leads the club and ranks among the top in the conference with 34 RBIs on the year. Thielges added a single earlier in the game and is now hitting .296 for the season.
Pacific scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the first and added one in the top of the third off CSUN starter Mia Pagano. The Tigers would then add a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh to further strain the Matadors' comeback hopes.
Pagano took the loss for the Matadors, tossing 6.1 innings with two strikeouts. Armagost went the distance for Pacific, fanning seven and walking only one Northridge batter. She also had three RBIs at the plate in helping her cause.
Northridge returns to action Friday, April 22 with a Big West Conference doubleheader at UC Santa Barbara. The Matadors will play a doubleheader on Friday and a single game on Saturday with both days starting at noon.
