SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge Softball team (24-14, 4-5 BWC) defeated UC Santa Barbara, 4-2, Wednesday afternoon in the season finale between the two squads. Amanda Pitzenberger threw a complete game and Micah Putnam had two RBIs to help lead the Matadors to the victory.
For CSUN, the victory snapped a five-game losing streak and pushed the squad to 24 victories on the season, the most by a Matador team since the 2004 squad won 35 games.
Pitzenberger allowed only four hits to the Gauchos, who entered the game leading the Big West Conference in hitting. The outing was her first complete game of the season and she finished with three strikeouts. Pitzenberger is now 3-1 with a 3.00 ERA and 13 strikeouts on the season.
At the plate, Putnam laced a sharp double, her fifth of the season, down the left-field line in the fourth inning to score two and give her a career-high 26 for the season. Hannah Fraijo and Tracy Allen had the other RBIs for CSUN and Allen and Jaclyn Rymer each had two hits on the game.
In the fourth, Christina Saenz drew a one-out walk and moved to second on a single by Rymer. Allen then belted a single through the left side to load the bases for Fraijo. After battling off several pitches with two strikes, Fraijo dropped a single into center field to give the Matadors a 1-0 lead and set-up Putnam's double.
In the fifth inning, Alexandria Alvarado led off the frame with a single. After Sanez grounded into a fielder's choice, Rymer collected her second hit of the game and Allen doubled to left to bring home Saenz.
UCSB would get two runs back in the bottom of the sixth inning, though Pitzenberger fought her way out of a bases loaded situation in the frame to preserve the Matador victory.
Northridge returns to action Saturday with a doubleheader against Cal Poly. First pitch in game one at Matador Diamond is slated for noon. Sunday, CSUN and CP meet at noon for a single game.
