The Cal State Northridge softball team (23-14, 3-5 BWC) dropped both games of a doubleheader Saturday to UC Santa Barbara. The Matadors fell 7-6 in game one and then lost 6-0 in game two against the Gauchos.

Game One Recap

The Cal State Northrdge dropped a 7-6 decision to UC Santa Barbara in game one of a doubleheader Saturday. Karla Chaparro had three hits and Krystal Rapahel scored a pair of runs for the Matadors.

UCSB scored a pair of runs in the first to take an early lead, getting a two-out, two-run double. The Gauchos got another run in the bottom of the second, again getting a two-out base hit.

The Matadors responded in the third. With the bases loaded and one out, Alex Alvarado was hit by a pitch to bring home the first run. Christina Saenz then cleared the bases with a double to right-center, though she was thrown out trying to advance to third on the play.

CSUN got another two runs in the fourth. Krystal Raphael reached on an error to start the frame and moved to second on a wild pitch. Lauren Olivas then slapped a single up the middle to bring home Raphael. Olivas then came around to score on an RBI single by Karla Chaparro to increase 6-3.

Alvarado helped preserve the lead in the bottom of the fourth, gunning down a Gaucho at the plate from centerfield. Duran then would induce a groundout with the bases loaded and two out to end the inning.

UCSB got three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game and chase Duran. Amanda Pitzenberger then came in and retired the next three Gauchos to get out of the jam. The Gauchos won the game in the bottom of the seven, scoring the game-winning run on a passed ball.

Pitzenberger took the loss for CSUN, dropping her season record to 2-1. Krista Cobb picked up the win for the Gauchos. Duran went five innings, allowing 13 hits and six earned runs. Pitzenberger allowed no hits with a walk and a strikeout in 1.2 innings of work.

Game Two Recap

The Cal State Northridge softball team lost, 6-0, to UCSB Saturday in the second game of a doubleheader. The Matadors managed three hits off UCSB pitcher Krista Cobb, with Christina Saenz, Hannah Fraijo and Alexandria Alvarado each collecting a single.

The Gauchos got on the board first, getting a two-out base hit in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead.

The Matadors nearly evened the score in the top of the fourth. Karla Chaparro reached on an error to start the inning and moved to second on a sac bunt by Christina Saenz. She moved up another base on a passed ball, but CSUN could not bring her home before the end of the inning.

UCSB added to its lead with a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning, making the score 3-0. The Gauchos added another three runs in the bottom of the sixth to extend their lead to 6-0.

Hannah Fraijo took the loss for the Matadors, moving to 5-2 on the season. She went five innings Saturday, allowing 11 hits and five earned runs. Cobb picked up her second week of the day with a complete game.

The Matadors and Gauchos will resume play on Wednesday with a single game at Campus Diamond in Santa Barbara. The game will start at 1 p.m. Please check with gomatadors.com for any updates on the series.

Next weekend, CSUN hosts Cal Poly for a three-game series starting with a doubleheader April 18 at Matador Diamond. The teams will play a single game on April 19 with both days starting at noon.
