NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge softball team (14-24, 2-4 BWC) lost 6-2 to Long Beach State in the final game of a three-game Big West series Sunday. The Matadors struck first in Sunday's affair only to see the 49ers score four runs in the first two innings to claim the series.
Northridge started the game off still riding the momentum of a dramatic win Saturday in the second game of a doubleheader between the two schools. With two outs in the first, Mikayla Thielges doubled to left field and Tracy Allen drew a walk. That brought up freshman Madeline Sale, who singled down the right field line to score Thielges.
However, the lead was shortlived for CSUN. Long Beach State answered with a two-out, two-run home run off Hannah Fraijo in the first inning and then added two doubles and two more runs in the second.
CSUN had opportunities in the middle frames, but left runners stranded in scoring position in the fourth and the fifth innings. The Matadors did score a run in the fifth, as Jaci Carlsen scored on an RBI single by Allen.
The 49ers scored two runs off Mia Pagano in the fifth to conlude the game's scoring. Fraijo took the loss for the Matadors, tossing two innings and allowing five hits and four earned runs,.
Pagano went 2.1 innings Sunday, giving up four htis and two earned runs while striking out three. Carly Wade tossed the final 1.2 innings of work for Northridge, surrendering one hit with one strikeout.
Erin Jones-Wesley earned the win for Long Beach State, her second of the weekend. Taylor Petty tossed the final three innings to earn a save.
Northridge returns to action Saturday, April 16 with a doubleheader against Pacific at noon at Matador Diamond. Tne Matadors and Tigers will then play a single game on April 17 also starting at noon.
