TUCSON, Ariz. - The Cal State Northridge softball team (12-17) lost 10-1 to No. 9 Arizona in five innings Saturday afternoon at Hillenbrand Stadium in the second game of a three-game series between the schools. Tracy Allen went 2-for-2 with an RBI for the Matadors, but Northridge could not slow down the potent Wildcat offense.
CSUN actually jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Jennifer Mosier led off the game by reaching on an error by the Arizona shortstop. Mikayla Thielges moved her to second with a sac bunt. With two outs in the frame, Allen picked up CSUN's first hit of the series with an RBI single to left field to score Mosier.
After holding the Wildcats at bay in the bottom of the first, Arizona responded with six runs in the bottom of the second. Matador starting pitcher Carly Wade was lifted during the inning and finished going 1.2 innings with four walks and a strikeout.
The Wildcats would add another run in the third and three more in the fourth. Mia Pagano tossed 1.1 innings of work for the Matadors, giving up five hits and three earned runs. Hannah Fraijo tossed the fourth for CSUN, giving up three hits and an earned run.
Kenzie Fowler earned the win for Arizona, giving up two hits and an unearned while fanning six. Samantha Sloniker drew Fowler's only walk of the game.
Northridge and Arizona conclude the three-game series with a single game Sunday, Mar. 27 at noon. The Matadors then open up their 2011 Big West season with a three-game series at UC Davis.
