Matadors Strike Twice over Utah in Non-Conference Finale

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge softball team (16-16) defeated Utah twice Thursday afternoon at Matador Diamond. The Matadors struck early in a 6-1 victory in game one, then rallied to defeat the Utes 8-2 in game two.

With the win, Northridge is now 16-16 on the year, bringing their record to an even .500. After starting the season 1-9, Northridge is now 15-7 (.682) over its past 22 games. The Matadors are also a perfect 4-0 against the Mountain West Conference for the season.

In game one, sophomore Hannah Fraijo tossed a complete game and surrendered only one hit and one earned run. She struck out four and walked two to earn her seventh win of the season.

At the plate, Northridge finished with 10 hits. Shortstop Karla Chaparro was 3-for-4 at the plate in game one, collecting a two-run double and a pair of singles. Kristen Mihm was a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs scored.

Joni Cook took the loss for Utah, going six innings with two walks and no strikeouts.

In game two, Fraijo won her second game of the day. She tossed 6.0 innings of relief work, allowing one earned run and five hits while striking out four. For the season, Fraijo is now a team-best 8-5 with a 3.21 ERA and 63 K's in 91.2 innings of work. Opponents are hitting .253 off Fraijo for the season.

At the plate, sophomore Jaci Carlsen was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and run scored. Tracy Allen blasted her second home run of the season, a three-run shot, in a five-run third. Christina Saenz then made it back-to-back home runs, connecting on a solo shot down the left field line for her fourth deep fly of the year.

Saenz now has 12 RBIs on the season and 77 for her career, moving her into 10th place in school history.

Chaparro and Mihm each added two more hits in game two as CSUN finished with 13 in the contest. Jennifer Mosier scored a pair of runs and stole her team-leading eighth base of the season in the game.

Ashley Smuda took the loss in game two for Utah. She went 4.2 innings, allowing 10 hits and seven earned runs. She had three strikeouts, but issued four walks.

Northridge returns to action next Friday, Apr. 2, when it hosts UC Davis in the Big West Conference season opener. The Matadors and Aggies will place twice on Apr. 2 beginning at noon, then follow that up with a single game at also at noon on Apr. 3.
