FRESNO, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge softball team (10-13) fell to Fresno State, 10-1 in six innings, Saturday night at the Bayer CropScience Classic. Karla Chaparro had two hits for CSUN, including her team-leading fifth double of the season, in defeat.
Evenly matched early in the game, CSUN saw Fresno State collect several important two-out hits to take the victory. Matador starter Hannah Fraijo went 5.0 innings, allowing seven hits and four earned runs. She fanned three bulldogs, but her record dropped to 3-4 on the season.
In addition to Chaparro's work at the dish, Christina Saenz collected her 10th RBI of the season. She now has driven in 75 runs in her CSUN career, leaving her one shy of tying Shannon Jones for 10th in school history.
Fresno State starter Morgan Melloh picked up the win, striking out nine Matadors in a complete game.
The Matadors got on the board quickly. Jaci Carlsen led off the game by being hit by a pitch. She then moved to third on a double by Karla Chaparro. Following a fielder's choice that saw Carlsen tagged out at the plate, Christina Saenz ripped a double to left-center to score Chaparro.
The Matadors would strand runners on second and third with one out in the frame.
Fresno State immediately tied the game in the bottom of the first. CSUN starter Hannah Fraijo hit the first batter, and then with one out, a single and a fielder's choice knotted the game at 1-1.
Fraijo also was charged with an illegal pitch in the frame, but a superb defensive play by Carlsen on a ground ball up the middle kept the score tied.
Both teams were quiet until the bottom of the fourth. With two outs and two strikes, Fresno State mashed a triple to right center that scored a run. On the play, a throwing error by Carlsen allowed the batter to come around to score and give Fresno State a 3-1 lead.
Fresno State started the bottom of the fifth with a triple. The next batter followed that up with an RBI double to deep center to increase the Bulldogs' lead to 4-1. With two outs in the frame, Fresno State added an RBI single to increase its lead to 5-1.
Amanda Pitzenberger took over for Fraijo to start the bottom of the sixth, but fared no better against the Bulldog line-up. She gave up a two-run double and an RBI single before being pulled with one out in the frame.
Mia Pagano took over for Pitzenberger in the circle in the bottom of the sixth. She immediately gave up a two-run home run to end the game.
The Matadors return to the diamond Sunday to face Mississippi State at 9 a.m. Northridge then returns home to face North Dakota (Tuesday), Oklahoma in a doubleheader (Wednesday) and Louisville (Thursday), with all games at Matador Diamond.
