SAN DIEGO, Calif. -
The Cal State Northridge softball team (15-9) swept its opening day at the San Diego Classic II, defeating Texas Tech, 3-2, and Oklahoma State, 4-3. Debbie Duran picked up both wins for CSUN in the circle and Alexandria Alvarado had four hits and three RBIs on the day for the Matadors.
Duran started and tossed a complete game against the Red Raiders and threw 4.2 innings of work against the Cowgirls to earn her ninth and 10th wins of the season. She is now 10-5 with a 1.70 ERA and 46 strikeouts in 86.1 innings of work.
Alvarado finished the day 4-for-8 at the plate with two runs scored in addition to her three RBIs. She is now hitting .260 with nine RBIs and 12 runs scored.
Jaclyn Rymer went 3-for-3 against Oklahoma State and scored three runs on the day. Karla Chaparro also had three hits on the day and Micah Putnam had three hits and two RBIs for the season. Putnam now has a career-high 17 RBIs this season while Rymer leads the team with 18 runs scored and is batting .302 for the season.
Texas Tech Recap
The Cal State Northridge softball team defeated Texas Tech, 3-2, in eight innings Friday at the San Diego Classic II. Debbie Duran tossed a complete game for the Matadors, scattering nine hits and striking out five for her ninth win of the season.
The Matadors and Red Raiders found themselves locked in a pitchers' duel throughout most of the contest. Texas Tech loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the first before ending the inning. Kristen Mihm singled to start the third inning and moved to second on a sac bunt by Jaclyn Rymer. However, the rally ended as the next two Matadors struck out looking.
With two outs in the fifth, Rymer laced a single to left field and Karla Chaparro then slapped a single into right field. Alexandria Alvarado then hit a single up the middle, scoring Rymer. However, Chaparro was tagged out at the plate trying to score from second to end the frame.
The Red Raiders evened the score in the bottom of the fifth, getting a two-out double to right center.
In the top of the sixth, Christina Saenz found the gap in left-center to double and lead off the inning. Tracy Allen then laid down a bunt single to put runners on the corners with no outs. Micah Putnam then knocked a sac fly to left field to bring home Jennifer Mosier, who had pinch-ran for Saenz.
Texas Tech evened the score once again in the bottom of the frame, getting a two-out single to left field.
CSUN got a two-out run of its own in the top of the eighth. Alvarado led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a sac bunt by Saenz. With two outs, Putnam battled the Texas Tech pitched and deposited a double over the right fielder's head to bring home Alvarado and give CSUN a 3-2 lead.
Duran retired the Red Raiders' side in order in the bottom of the eighth to get the victory. Ashly Jacobs took the loss for Texas Tech.
Oklahoma State Recap
The Cal State Northridge softball team defeated Oklahoma State, 4-3, Friday afternoon in the San Diego Classic II. Jaci Carlsen drove in the winning run with a pinch-hit fly ball in the bottom of the seventh inning and Debbie Duran tossed 4.2 hitless innings of relief work to pick up her second win of the day for CSUN.
The Matadors finished with 11 hits in the game and both teams found themselves leaving runners on base throughout the game. In all, CSUN left 10 runners on base and Oklahoma State stranded eight runners.
The Cowgirls got on the board first with a two-out RBI in the first inning. Northridge would answer with a run of its own in the bottom of the frame and extended its lead to 3-1 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second.
OSU tied the game in the top of the third, at which point Duran took over. She ended the Cowgirl rally in the third by getting two clutch outs with the bases loaded.
After trading empty frames for the rest of the game, Northridge won the game in the bottom of the seventh. Karla Chaparro started the inning with a single and following a fielder's choice, Christina Saenz hit a single to put runners on first and second. Micah Putnam then collected a single of her own to load the bases. Carlsen then drove a towering fly ball that the OSU left fielder dropped, allowing Alvarado to score.
Duran went 4.2 innings against OSU, walking one and striking out one. Alex Villalobos took the loss for Oklahoma State.
The Matadors resume play at the San Diego Classic II Saturday with a pair of games. First up is meeting with Miami (OH) at 11:30, followed by a 7 p.m. contest against Iowa State.
