NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge softball team (6-10) split its afternoon doubleheader with Iowa Saturday afternoon at the Matador Invitational. The Matadors rallied for a 7-4 victory in game one before falling to the Hawkeyes, 4-1, in game two.
Christina Saenz and Karla Chaparro each had two hits in game one for Northridge. Saenz blasted her team-leading third home run of the season, finishing with two runs scored and an RBI. Chaparro picked up her second double and first stolen base of the year in the victory.
In the circle, Amanda Pitzenberger tossed 5.0 innings of three-hit relief work to earn her team-leading fourth win of the season. She allowed only one earned run while walking two and striking out one.
Jaci Carlsen added her second triple of the year in the win, and finished with two runs scored and two walks. Krystal Raphael, Alexandria Alvarado and Kristen Mihm each had RBIs for the Matadors as well.
In all, seven different CSUN players had hits in game one. The Hawkeyes used three pitchers in the game, with Katie Brown taking the loss.
In game two, Northridge left 11 runners on base in a 4-1 loss. Iowa hit two home runs in the game, one each off Pitzenberger and Mia Pagano.
Pitzenberger took the loss in the game, going 2.0 innings and allowing two earned runs. Pagano tossed the last 4.0 innings of work, also allowing two earned runs. Pagano gave up only two hits in her work, fanning two as well.
Amanda Zust tossed a complete game to earn the victory for Iowa.
With the split, Northridge finished the season with a 5-2 record against the Big 10 Conference, a league that ranked fifth in the RPI in 2009.
Northridge continues its run at the Matador Invitational Saturday, facing Santa Clara at 3 p.m. Three games precede the Broncos-Matadors match-up and all games will be played at Matador Diamond.
